Training course on preparedness and response for nuclear or radiological emergencies

Course:  October 4-8, 2010

Background

Major improvements have been made in recent years to emergency and post-accident management, the whole concept of off-site nuclear emergency management being reviewed in depth at international, European and national levels. This notably includes development of improved guidance on the protection of populations in the emergency phase of a nuclear accident or a radiological emergency, advances in decision support tools and enhanced methods for information and data exchange. Moreover, participative governance processes have been initiated in several countries to promote and support national or local stakeholder groups in the development of projects related to emergency and post-accident management.

SCK•CEN has a long tradition in organising international trainings in the domain of nuclear emergency management. In particular, this course has been organised by SCK•CEN several times in Mol (Belgium) and abroad and has been very well evaluated by the participants. The feedback received during the years allowed to continuously improve the content and format of the course.

The current edition of this course is set up in collaboration with the main European actors and in the framework of developing a supranational training programme as formulated by the European platform on emergency and post-accident preparedness and response initiated by the partners in the FP6 project EURANOS (European approach to nuclear and radiological emergency management and rehabilitation strategies, (www.eu-neris.net). One of the objectives of this platform is maintaining and enhancing knowledge and competence through emergency exercises, training and education, thus fostering best practice in emergency response.
