Radiological Impact and Performance Assessments

The expert group Radiological Impact and Performance Assessments (IPA) is divided into 2 subunits:

Biosphere Impact Studies

The research unit Biosphere Impact Studies investigates the behaviour of radionuclides in the terrestrial environment and develops models to predict radionuclide behaviour.

The effect of ionising radiation on non-human biota is also studied. The impact of ionising radiation and radioactive substances on man and environment is evaluated.

Performance Assessments

The unit Performance Assessments is involved in the evaluation and demonstration of the long-term safety of radioactive waste disposal facilities. This includes modelling of radionuclide release from a multi-barrier near-surface or deep disposal facility to the geosphere and biosphere.
